Today, there are approximately 474 production lines across nearly 200 companies in 40 countries, with the United States, Japan, and Europe accounting for a significant portion of global production capacity.
As of now, the world’s annual production capacity for coated steel sheets stands at around 14 million tons, with the U.S. contributing 4.5 million tons, Europe 4 million tons, and Japan 2.7 million tons. This collective output from the U.S., Japan, and Europe constitutes about 84% of the global capacity.
Growth of Coated Steel Sheet Production in China
China's journey into coated steel sheet production began in the 1980s, with the introduction of technology and equipment from abroad. The initial production capabilities were modest, but the industry has since experienced explosive growth. From 1998 to 2001, the production of coated steel sheets in China grew at an average annual rate of 64%, while consumption surged by 68%. Despite this rapid growth, domestic production struggled to meet market demand, leading to increased imports.
In recent years, there has been a surge in investments in steel production in China, leading to the establishment of numerous new production lines. By mid-2004, there were 24 operational coated steel sheet production lines with a capacity of 1.616 million tons annually, alongside additional lines under construction. This expansion has positioned China as a significant player in the global coated steel sheet market.
With the ongoing development of various industries in China, the demand for coated steel sheets continues to rise. This trend sets the stage for these sheets to become increasingly popular as a packaging material, providing a viable alternative to traditional metal packaging solutions.
